It originates from the Bavaria region and breed belongs to the local shepherd dogs. The original version had the wired hair as well. The dog was first registered in 1899 and has become highly popular ever since.

The white Swiss shepherd is a huge dog and weighs about 80 pounds. It is perhaps one of the most recognized breeds these days. The shepherd usually comes in three kinds – the rough coated, the short-coated variety as well as the long-coated variety.

As compared to the other dog breeds, the white Swiss shepherd can be extremely hardworking. It takes a lot of interest in learning and considering his intellect, the dog is mostly used in police work, for search missions, to help the blind and are highly popular as guard dogs. You must always pick your shepherd from a good breeder, since not all of them get along very well with children or other pets. The dog can be extremely protective of the family that it stays with, therefore you must ensure that he is properly trained or socialized before bringing it in public.

These dogs are easy to train and contain high levels of energy. They must be involved in different family outings or jobs and these dogs are always eager to please. The shepherds do not have a lot of grooming requirements, however they are heavy shedders and need to be brushed daily. Just like all other dogs, the Swiss shepherds must be taken to a vet for proper vaccinations. If properly cared, the dog can live up to 13 years of age.

One of humanity’s defining characteristic is our fondness for keeping other species as pets. No other species does this. For humans, keeping a pet has its own unique rewards for which there can be no substitute.

Most people start out having common pets like a cat, a dog. Pretty soon they move on to a goldfish or a bird. Those with a hankering for a more challenging pet to keep will try and take care of exotic creatures like spiders, snakes, or scorpions. There are people however, who have no wish to take care of an animal having none or more than four legs. These people will usually be drawn to keep other fur-bearing mammals like mice, skunks, or raccoons.

People who keep raccoons will need to have a very long patience. They’re extremely clever with their hands and this usually gets them into trouble. Raccoons are scavengers by nature and in the wild; they will eat anything edible they can get their hands on. They will even raid the neighborhood garbage cans and nearby garbage dumps. That being said, raccoons are not usually filthy creatures.

Raccoons eat with their front paws making them look adorable during mealtimes. Unfortunately, their eating habits are not exactly what you would call neat. Add the fact that a domesticated raccoon’s favorite food is apple sauce or apples and peanut butter, you end up with a pretty stick-faced pet. Raccoon owners find that these messy eaters need to be bathed at least once a week, perhaps more, depending on whether your hand keeps sticking to their fur when you pet them.

Bathing your pet raccoon is not at all difficult. Unlike cats, raccoons actually like to play in water. You can simply pretend that bath time is simply an extension of playtime. Raccoons are mammals, and therefore warm-blooded. They won’t like being dumped in a basinful of cold or room temperature water. You should bathe your pet raccoon in warm water. You can even do this over the sink. To do this, let your raccoon hang from our forearm as if hanging from a tree branch. You can wear an on old long-sleeved cotton shirt for this in case your pet’s claws are digging uncomfortably into your arm. Wet your pet by cupping your hand under the warm, running water and bringing it to the raccoon. Don’t place your pet directly under the stream. Once wet, shampoo it liberally with baby shampoo. This mild shampoo won’t irritate a raccoon’s eye in case it gets into them. You should avoid getting its head wet when possible. You can use a damp rag to clean its face and whiskers if need be.

You can let your pet raccoon play in the water for a while before rinsing it in the same manner you used to wet it. Towel it dry first before letting it shake off excess water from its coat. A regularly bathed pet raccoon won’t put up a fuss to this routine once it gets used to it. In fact, it may even look forward to these baths.

Invertebrates are so called because they have no spines to speak of. You may think that such spineless creatures are pushovers, but that’s where you’ll be wrong. Among these spineless creatures are insects, spiders, and scorpions. The latter two make great pets when cared for properly and handled carefully.

Emperor scorpions are the most popular breed of scorpions kept as pets. Their venom is mild and their care and feeding is relatively easy. For those who have surpassed the challenge of keeping their emperor scorpions alive and relatively well-fed, the next challenge would be to breed from them. Below are a few tips on breeding your emperor scorpion.

Telling them apart.

The first thing you need to do after you’ve decided to breed your emperor scorpions is to tell whether the one you have is a male or a female. Females, in general, are larger than males. This is a good indicator, but just to make sure, take a good look at the scorpion’s pectines. Pectines are the scale-like protective armor found across the abdomen of scorpions. The pectines of male emperor scorpions are bigger and resemble a fringe on their abdomen. A female’s pectines on the other hand, look short in contrast to a male’s. You can surf the net for pictures of a male and a female emperor scorpion if you’re not entirely sure how to classify your scorpion.

Setting up the mood.

Like most creatures, emperor scorpions breed readily when they feel comfortable in their surroundings. They’re burrowers, so you may need to have a deeper substrate. Three to five inches of loam or clay would be perfect for your scorpions. You will also need to get a bigger tank for mating your scorpions. A ten gallon tank is okay for a single emperor scorpion, but two will get crowded and stressed in it. A twenty to thirty gallon fish tank is best for a pair of breeding scorpions. During their courtship process, they will need a wide, flat open space. A strategically placed flat rock or driftwood in their tank should do the trick. Don’t forget to feed them a variety of food. Sticking to one food source could lead to a deficiency in one or more nutrients. Varying the type of food you give your emperor scorpions will ensure that they get a well-balanced diet and give them an even bigger incentive to mate. Full scorpions are more likely to seek mates than starved ones. The humidity in the cage should also be at its highest, at least sixty to eighty percent. Frequent misting is a must.

Sit back and watch.

Keep the male in the tank or about a week or more. Remove it when you notice the female getting bigger with young. Leaving the male in the tank could cause undue stress in the female and make her eat all of her young. The gestation period of an emperor scorpion is around seven to ten months, although it could last for up to a year in some cases. A female emperor scorpion will give birth to approximately eight to thirty tiny scorpions. It’s best if you leave the tiny young things to the care of their mother. She may eat a few, but this is normal. In the long run, you’ll get a higher survival rate if you let her take care of them than if you remove them and put them in another tank. Try not to stress her out by limiting your handling and providing plenty of food for her and her young. You should be able to separate the young emperor scorpions from their mother with no ill effects just after their first molt.

Monkeys have been touted as excellent pets both by legitimate pet shops and black market dealers, most of whom don’t keep a pet monkey themselves. To a certain extent, monkeys make great pets. They’re amusing, interesting, and easy to feed. On the other hand, they also tend to fling their own poo at whatever angers or threaten them. People tend to think that monkeys are basically just little people. It’s easy to mistake them for miniature humans since they sometimes behave as a human would. Capuchin monkeys in particular, have a wide range of facial expressions similar to that of a human’s.

The problem with thinking that monkeys are miniature humans is that they’re not. They’re monkeys. Like humans, capuchin monkeys are social animals. They learn how to be a capuchin monkey from other capuchin monkeys. Young capuchin monkeys learn appropriate monkey behavior, means of communication, and hierarchy within their troupe. Take them out of their native habitat and they’ll never learn to be a proper little monkey.

They will have to make a great deal of adjustment when incorporated into a human home where hierarchy is not clearly shown by means of grooming, communication is done by making complicated sounds as well as facial expressions, and behavior is wildly different from the behavior of capuchin monkeys in the wild. They may eventually be able to adjust, but it will be difficult and stressful for them. They will always feel out of place among humans, and if they were raised from babyhood in a human household, they will also feel out of place among other capuchin monkeys. They’ll feel uncomfortable in the former because they know that humans are radically different from them. They’ll be treated as an outcast by the latter because they have never learned proper capuchin monkey behavior, never having been exposed to it. Capuchin monkeys who grew up as pets are caught in the middle. They’re full grown by the age of five but will never truly learn to be human, nor monkey.

People who would like to make pets out of them should make absolutely sure that they could adequately fill all the needs of a capuchin monkey. These needs include the basics like food, shelter, and safety as well as the higher needs of socialization and affection. Capuchin monkeys will always be wild animals at heart and humans shouldn’t delude themselves into believing that they’re just ‘little people’. People should realize that keeping exotic animals as pets require a different level of care and knowledge.

Environmental conservationists believe that keeping wild animals as household pets is not the right way of saving them as a species. Instead, they advocate saving more of the endangered species natural habitat. Capuchin monkeys as a species may not particularly be in danger but there are a lot of other species highly sought as exotic pets by unscrupulous humans. As a matter of fact, it is their value as a pet that makes black-market dealers all the more anxious to acquire them for trade, thus decimating their species even more.

Article by Susana Lenser

Are you thinking about getting a hedgehog? Have you wondered what kind of habitat he or she may have wandered through in the wild? If so, you have come to the right place! Read on! The actual name “hedgehog” dates to 1450 and comes from Middle English. Hedgehogs were found so frequently underneath hedges (essentially thick bushes) that they were named for them! “Hog” in hedgehog also reflects the somewhat pig-like nose (although to us it may look pointy) of the hedgehog.

Hedgehogs are small spine covered mammals that many in North America confuse with a larger quill covered rodent – the porcupine. Hedgehogs and porcupines are actually not related at all and developed their spiney exteriors independently of each other. Hedgehogs are in fact much smaller than porcupines – they range from one to four pounds in weight, and their quills are not barbed, poisoned, or even really removable. Instead the quills act merely as a defensive mechanism to deter predators when the hedgehog rolls into a ball.

Hedgehogs originated in Great Britain, Europe, Asia, and Africa (none are native to North or South America) and were also introduced to other areas such as New Zealand and the islands of Scotland for pest control. Hedgies can still be found in the wild today in habitats ranging from wooded areas, mountains, semi-urban areas like parks, to deserts. As hedgies like to be sleeping during the day, you would be most likely to see one out and about around dusk. During the daytime a hedgehog likes to spend his time asleep in a comfy burrow – either a hole dug in the ground or a soft nest of leaves under a bush.

In the wild, hedgehogs would dine on a delicious diet of invertebrates such as bugs and worms, small animals like lizards and rodents, bird eggs, fruits and vegetables. When food becomes scarce, a hedgehog naturally turns to hibernation. Today domesticated hedgehogs will still try to hibernate when they become chilly but this is actually dangerous as they have trouble waking up their metabolisms continue to burn – causing a slow wasting.

In fact, they’re fast becoming a popular exotic pet here in the States as well as overseas. Wildlife centers often take in orphaned hedgehogs. In some cases, hedgehog-owners are left with orphaned young pups when the mother dies while giving birth or from post-delivery infections. Either way, they are left with no choice but to hand-rear the baby hedgehogs. Below are a few useful tips you need to know if you plan to hand-raise a baby hedgehog.

Hedgehogs are lactose-intolerant. Giving them cow’s milk-based formula will give them diarrhea. Sheep’s milk is a good substitute for their mother’s milk. You can also mix them a re-hydrating fluid with sugar, water and sheep’s milk. This protein-rich milk may also be enriched with raw egg yolk as the baby hedgehog grows older. Baby hedgehogs need to be fed once every three hours or more. Make sure that you tilt the feeding bottle all the way up when feeding to prevent them from taking in a lot of air. You can also use a large dropper or a fifty cc syringe to give them their milk. If sheep’s milk happens to be scarce in your area, you can make-do with kitten milk formulas sold in most pet stores. Should that also happen to be unavailable, you can always opt for soy-based baby milk formulas as a last resort.

The digestive system of newborn hedgehogs may be a bit slow on the uptake, so to speak. Stroking their belly after a feeding will help stimulate their digestive processes and keep them from getting bloated. Check if they urinate or void after every other feeding, this means their digestive organs are all working as they should. Baby hedgehogs need to be fed every half hour or so. The gap between feeding time lengthens as they grow older but they’ll be having milk as their primary source of nutrition until they’re fully weaned.

Baby hedgehogs will exclusively live on their mother’s milk for the first three weeks of age. Once they start growing teeth, you can slowly wean them of the milk formula by giving them mashed, ripe banana as well as minced meat. You can still keep giving them milk but switch to a shallow dish instead of a bottle, dropper, or syringe. Egg yolk, boiled or raw, will give them an additional source of protein. You can also start giving the baby hedgehog some high-protein canned dog food at this time. They’ll also love like mealworms which you can easily obtain from fish shops. Chewy insects like crickets should be given later when they have a full complement of teeth. Try not to give them too many egg yolks as this could lead to a Vitamin B deficiency.

Like human babies, baby hedgehogs are sensitive to the cold. Wrap them snugly in blankets during feeding and make sure their cage or den is free from drafts. Their formula should also be warmed first, before giving it to them.

Article by Isla Campell

Although hedgehogs have been around for over 15 million years, it is believed their numbers are in decline. With the main reason cited as habitat loss, there are many things one can do to help preserve the species. Well-known for its gardening attributes – they are particularly fond of slugs and snails – and the only spiky mammal present in the UK today.Commonly found around woodland edges and under hedgerows, they also favour suburban habitats, and in particular, gardens. Nocturnal by nature, the hedgehog is insectivorous, meaning it mainly likes to feed on insects and other small animals. However, it will also eat things like bird’s eggs, mushrooms and berries. It is a frequent misconception that hedgehogs should be fed milk and bread: although they like to eat such products, they are lactose intolerant and any dairy will upset their stomachs. It is therefore recommended, when either encouraging hedgehogs into your garden or indeed, feeding one you have found, to leave out such items as meat-based pet food, fresh water, peanuts, raisins or mealworm. Hedgehogs, like many mammals, like to hibernate in the winter. Indeed, advice issued on the topic of hedgehogs states that efficient winter nests are vital for their survival. Unfortunately, due to the loss of their more natural habitats, it can be hard for them to find safe places as shelter. That is why, if you have the space to do so, it can be a nice idea to build a hedgehog house. In this way, you are not only providing essential protection for the spiky creatures, but you are helping the species to keep their numbers up! Additionally, female hedgehogs, if they like the house, will use it in the springtime to have their young in.Whether you are building your own, or buying one of the ready-made houses available, there are some basic rules that should be followed, to ensure the house is as effective as possible. For example, the most popular materials for a hedgehog house include wood and natural materials, like grass and leaves. The experts recommend that once you have purchased, or built the house that you line the floor with a mixture of soil, leaves and straw. Furthermore, it is essential to ensure the house is waterproof, as well as providing enough space for the hedgehog. Once the basic hedgehog house structure is ready, it is important to cover it with a combination of leaves, dried grass and twigs: this will provide added protection. Placing the house away from the wind is also necessary, to avoid the hedgehog becoming too cold. Ideally, it should face south and be located against a wall or fence, for example. The hedgehog hibernates from around November time until Easter, although the weather plays the ultimate determining role. Therefore, when it is reaches the right time for your spiky friend to emerge from its hedgehog house, it is important to leave out food for it. As obvious as this is, it will be essential to the hedgehog’s survival, since it will need to replenish lost fat.
